Establishment of Climate-smart model villages for sustainable agricultural development project

Time duration- 2015

Objective - Establishment of adaptation measures to overcome negative impacts of climate change in collaboration with farmers in order to achieve higher land productivity conserving the environment and land.

Methodology - Two villages ( Baduluoya East / Badulla district, Rathriwewa / Monaragala district) has been selected form dry zone where one which is having small tank based irrigation system and the other one having anicut based farming system to develop as a climate smart villages. Comprehensive baseline study will be carried out to capture the current socio-economic situation, resource availability, assets climate related risk level for increase productivity, average production and income and risk management approaches of village households while reducing the GHG.

Based on the information collected and the with the willingness of farmers for participatory approach, following interventions has been implemented systematically to reduce the greenhouse gas emission and to increase the resilience of climate change impacts for crop production and to increase the socio-economic status of the farming community.


  • Survey and famer awareness programs on new technologies and weather forecasting program-
  • Establishment of small weather data collecting unit with rain gages and other equipment weather forecast through SMS
  • Land development-40ha (cashew plantation, bio fences, soil conservation bunds/other suitable structures preparation, drainage sys.)
  • Introduction of ideal surface water irrigation system (micro irrigation)-for 10 ha
  • Establishment of Low cost rain water harvesting tank -10
  • Establishment of water holding capacity increasing structures (coconut husk pits, Poly mulching, percolation pits) -5 ha
  • Establishment of Dug wells with water pump /irrigation system -2 sys.
  • Establishment of Rain Shelters and poly house (100m2) to protect crop from heavy rain and storm water -10 structures
  • Development of drainage system – 2 ha
  • Implementation of appropriate cropping technology- 5 ha
  • Establishment of GAP (Good Agric. Practices) farms. Use of leaf color chart, adaption of recommended fertilizer schedule. - 10 ha
  • Establishment of low cost bio gas production unit - 10
  • Distribution of solar panels and Solar powered irrigation Systems -10
