National Agricultural Information Network - Cyber Agricultural Extension
Department of Agriculture (DOA) has initiated the establishment of Rural Agriculture Knowledge Centres / Cyber Extension Units at Agrarian Service Centres under the proposed National Agriculture Information Network project, in order to find quick solutions to the farm problems by providing DOA recommended agriculture technology information to farming community in Sri Lanka.
During the initial stage of the project, since the Agriculture Instructor’s (AIs) offices were not facilitated with the telephone and internet facility, Interactive Multimedia CD-ROMs on agriculture crops were utilized in agriculture technology transfer. Presently, 51 IMM CD-ROMs have been produced in Sinhala and Tamil medium with the technical assistance of the Research Officers.
Fifty Three Rural Agriculture Knowledge Centres / Cyber Extension Units were established to cover all the districts of the island, under the pilot Cyber Extension project. (25 units during the year 2004, 20 units in 2005 and 8 units in year 2007). Each cyber extension unit were equipped with a high-end multimedia computers, digital camera, laser printer, Scanner, UPS and telephone with internet facility. The Cyber Units are managed by the Agriculture Instructors (AIs) under the purview of central government and provincial government Department of Agriculture. The pilot Cyber Extension project was funded by the Sri Lanka Council for Agriculture Research Policy and the Granary Area Programme of the DOA.
Deyata Kirula National Exhibition 2011
All the AIs office in Monaragala district are upgraded to as Cyber Extension Units by providing computer facility through the development programme implemented parallel to the Deyata Kirula National Exhibition 2011. All the AIs office in the island will be joined to the National Agriculture Information Network through a national level project proposed by the Audio Visual Centre of the DOA.
